What's actually causing the leak in the first place?

Flashing failures around chimneys, vents, and roof valleys are common culprits, and wind-driven rain during a nor'easter or a tropical system pushes water up and under shingles in a way that a straight-down rainstorm doesn't. A stain is a late sign, not an early one — insulation can be wet for days before enough water saturates through the drywall to show on the ceiling below. Can wet insulation just be dried instead of replaced?
